Preschool vs. Daycare – What’s the Difference?

There comes a time when parent’s are forced to make a very important decision in whether or not they want to send their child to preschool versus sending their child to a daycare center. Some may ask, “Is there even a difference between preschool and daycare?” The answer is, yes. There is absolutely a difference between the two. Although the decision can be overwhelming, it is important to understand the difference between them so the parents/guardians of the child can make the best possible decision for both their them and their child.

The difference between Preschool and Daycare being…

Preschool

1.     Age Group: 3-5 years old
2.     Education is the main focus of this program.
3.     The main focus of Preschool is to teach and educate the children.
4.     Preschool can be a part of Daycare, but Daycare cannot be a part of Preschool.
5.     Preschool lasts a few hours.

Daycare

1.     Age Group: Toddlers to Elementary school
2.     Education is not the main priority. In fact, a child may or may not be taught in this system.
3.     The main focus of Daycare is to look after and care for the children.
4.     Daycare can include Preschool, but Preschool can never include Daycare.
5.     Daycare lasts until the parent or guardian arrives to take their child home. Hours may vary depending on the parent/guardians schedule.

Although no decision is right for everyone, it is important to educate people on the difference between Preschool vs. Daycare so the child is gaining the most out of their experience as well because truthfully, the child is the one who is attending.

  1. I have some additional questions about the differences:
    1. What are the relative costs?
    2. What is the adult/child ratio?
    3. What certification / training do the adults have?
